Day to day itinerary

After being picked up in Nairobi, you’ll drive to the town of Nanyuki for lunch. You’ll be crossing the equator en route to the Sirimon Park gate (2660m). From the gate, you will trek through a magnificent montane forest, bamboo, and giant heather zones before reaching the high-altitude moorland and your first hut (Old Moses Camp, 3300m) for dinner and an overnight stay. This is a gentle trek that takes 3 to 4 hours, gaining an elevation of 680m.

Up the spectacular Mackinder Valley past strange giant groundsel and lobelia plants to emerge onto what looks like a set from Star Trek – Shipton’s Camp at 4236m. This is a surreal setting below the towering peaks and glaciers, with its resident populations of bizarre rock hyrax and beautiful sunbirds.

For better acclimatisation, you’ll have a rest day at the Shipton Camp. Short walks / day hikes are possible in the morning. The afternoon is for you to rest.

Climbing high and sleeping low is excellent for acclimatisation.

From Shipton’s Ccamp, the trail leads to Kami Camp, which is below the north face of Batian. You’ll continue west before reaching Hausberg Col at 4590m. You will descend into the upper Hausberg valley and you can rest at the oblong and hausberg tarns. When you ascend to the crest of a ridge known as Arthur’s Seat, you can see the trail winding along. You will descend to Mackinders camp for the night.

You’ll start at 2.30 am to attempt to reach Point Lenana in time for sunrise. The climb takes 4 hrs and to add to the beauty, Kilimanjaro is also visible from the horizon. You’ll descend to Mintos Hut for full breakfast. After a short rest, you’ll go down further to get to Mt Kenya Bandas, where you’ll have dinner & get sleep.

You can enjoy log fires, hot showers, and a bed at the Bandas!

After breakfast, you’ll descend on a broad track through bamboo and virgin rainforest to meet a vehicle for a transfer to Chogoria town and then onward to Nairobi, arriving by 17:00.
