8 Day Mount Toubkal Summer trip

Overview

Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain is 4,167 metres tall and it has amazing views of Marrakech. This is an exciting trek with fantastic views, and only a little bit of snow. It is easier to climb it in the summer.

Day to day itinerary

You’ll be picked up from Marrakech Airport and you’ll go to your riad, where you will spend the night.

You’ll leave Marrakech after breakfast and drive to Imlil (1740m). This is the place where you’ll meet your mule team. Once all of your gear is loaded, you’ll begin walking along the valley towards Tacheddirt, which is some 8 km from Imlil. Soon, the trail begins to ascend as you climb up to the pass at Tizi ‘n Tamatert (2279m). You’ll then descend to the pretty village of Ouaneskra (2200m) and continue walking, for another half-hour or so, to Tacheddirt (2300m), where you’ll set up camp near the river. You’ll do around 4 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

You’ll immediately begin a long, slow ascent to the pass at Tizi Likemt (3555m). At the top, you’ll enjoy your first view of the Toubkal Massif before you start a long downhill descent to the village of Azib Likemt (2200m), where you’ll set up your camp for the night. You’ll do about 5 hours walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

This day is going to be a long but quite easy. You’ll be passing many different landscapes. From Tizi ‘n Ououraine (3120m), you’ll enjoy more views of the Toubkal Massif, including the summit, the east face and the Ifni Dome (3876m). The trail then takes you to Amsouzert (1700m), one of the most striking villages in the region, where you’ll spend the night in a local gite or at a campsite. You’ll do around 6 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

To the west of Amsouzert, there are several small villages, which you’ll explore as you make your way towards Ifni Lake (2300m), the only lake in the Massif. It is surrounded by rocky mountains and giant heaps of rubble, and it’s unusually deep.

You’ll arrive there by lunchtime and spend the afternoon relaxing at the shore. You’ll camp in this area too. You’ll spend around 4 hours walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

By now, you should be fit and acclimatised, and ready to tackle the hardest day of the trek. You’ll make your way along a steep path that leads up a seemingly endless scree slope. Eventually, you’ll reach the pass at Tizi n’Ouanoums (3664m), which is a narrow ledge between two shafts of rock. From here, there’ll be a long zigzag descent to Nelther Refuge (3200m), where you’ll spend the night in tents. You’ll do about 6 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

You’ll leave before dawn and go to the summit of Toubkal (4167m). If the conditions are good, it should take you no more than 2-3 hours to reach the summit, where you’ll enjoy beautiful views of the entire Atlas range and the Marrakech plains beyond. You’ll then descend fairly quickly to the villages of Sidi Chamharouch and Aremd, before walking through a well-forested trail to Imlil and going back to Marrakech. You’ll do about 9 hours of walking and you’ll spend the night in a riad.

Breakfast, and lunch included.

You’ll go back to the airport and depart.

Breakfast included.

What to bring?

You need to prepare as you would for a trek in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (during autumn through to late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind after your trip; carry out what you carry in.

Our treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can go on the Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On the mule treks, you usually have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses/with families or doing wild camping in 2-person tents.

In addition to what you’d regularly pack, here is a checklist:

  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for the camp/guesthouse
  • Trekking trousers
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers/rain-pants
