5 Day Mount Toubkal & Sahara Tour

Overview

In the higher elevations, you’ll find mostly evergreen alpines with some occasional undergrowth. The lower elevations have diverse valleys of walnut, apple, cherry and other fruit trees as well as mountain orchids, poppies and irises.

Day to day itinerary

You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Marrakech. After going to the little village of Imlil, you will start your trek. As you head along the Mizane Valley, you’ll pass the village of Aremd. You’ll then continue east and your route will take you along mule tracks into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. After crossing the river, you eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here, the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the refuge (3206m), which is where you will spend the night. You’ll do about 5 to 6 hours of walking.

Lunch and dinner included.

Early in the morning, you’ll attempt to reach the summit of Jebel Toukbal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. Your route will take you up the south cirque, and you’ll cross the stream above the refuge. The walk is relatively easy, but the scree and the altitude will make it quite difficult in parts. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. When you reach the summit, you will see breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. There are unrestricted views in every direction. You can see the Marrakesh Plain, the High Atlas in the north, the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. You will retrace your steps when you go back down the mountain and head back towards Imlil. You’ll spend the night in a guesthouse in Imlil.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

After breakfast, you will leave Imlil. First, you’ll cross the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass. You will pass through many Berber villages, and once you’re in the desert, you’ll see riverside oases and barren hillsides that are clustered with Kasbahs. After lunch, you’ll drive to the Valley of the Roses, and along the way, you’ll have beautiful views of the Dades Valley. On the way, you will be able to visit Ait Ben Haddou. Overnight, you’ll stay in Dades.

Breakfast and dinner included.

After breakfast, you’ll be driven to the Todra Gorge, and after a short stop there, you’ll drive to the dunes of Erg Chebbi. You will arrive there at around 4, and after a short break, you will ride camels into the dunes, which is where you will spend the night in Berber tents. After watching a beautiful sunset, you will enjoy a fantastic dinner.

Breakfast and dinner included.

After watching the sunrise and having breakfast at the campsite you will ride your camel to the auberge. From there, you’ll drive back to Marrakech via the Tichka Pass.

Breakfast included.

What to bring?

You need to prepare as you would for a trek in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (during autumn through to late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind after your trip; carry out what you carry in.

Our treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can go on the Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On the mule treks, you usually have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses/with families or doing wild camping in 2-person tents.

In addition to what you’d regularly pack, here is a checklist:

  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for the camp/guesthouse
  • Trekking trousers
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers/rain-pants
