5 Day Atlas Valleys & Toubkal Summit

Overview

Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain is 4,167 metres tall and it has amazing views of Marrakech. This is an exciting trek with fantastic views, and only a little bit of snow. It is easier to climb it in the summer.

Day to day itinerary

You’ll go from Marrakech to the Imi Ouglad village (1300m). This will be about an hour and 15 min long drive. There, you will meet your mule and muleteer. First, you will walk to Tizi l’bour (1500m) and then you’ll go to Imsker village (1300m). After that, you’ll walk up to Ousertik Valley, where you will spend the night in a local village gite (2200m). You’ll do about 5 to 6 hours of walking.

Lunch and dinner included.

Today, you will walk from Gliz to Oukaimeden. Then, you’ll go to Tizi ‘n Addi (3000m) and finally to Tacheddirt (2300m) where you will spend the night. Tacheddirt is the highest village in the Atlas Mountains. You’ll do about 5 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Today, you’ll cross the Imnane Valley, one of the most famous valleys in this area. You’ll walk past Tizi ‘n Tamatert (2300m) and end up in Imlil, where you will spend the night. You’ll do about 3 to 4 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

After breakfast, you will start your trek. As you head along the Mizane Valley, you’ll pass the village of Aremd. You’ll then continue east and your route will take you along mule tracks into the high rocky cliffs above the valley. After crossing the river, you eventually come to the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here, the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the refuge (3206m), which is where you will spend the night. You’ll do about 5 to 6 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Early in the morning, you’ll attempt to reach the summit of Jebel Toukbal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. Your route will take you up the south cirque, and you’ll cross the stream above the refuge. The walk is relatively easy, but the scree and the altitude will make it quite difficult in parts. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. When you reach the summit, you will see breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. There are unrestricted views in every direction. You can see the Marrakesh Plain, the High Atlas in the north, the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. You will retrace your steps when you descend the mountain and head back towards Imlil. You’ll go back to Marrakech. You’ll do about 9 to 10 hours of walking today.

Breakfast, and lunch included.

What to bring?

You need to prepare as you would for a trek in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (during autumn through to late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind after your trip; carry out what you carry in.

Our treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can go on the Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On the mule treks, you usually have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses/with families or doing wild camping in 2-person tents.

In addition to what you’d regularly pack, here is a checklist:

  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for the camp/guesthouse
  • Trekking trousers
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers/rain-pants
