4 Days Peaks & Valleys of the Atlas

Overview

Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain is 4,167 metres tall and it has amazing views of Marrakech. This is an exciting trek with fantastic views, and only a little bit of snow. It is easier to climb it in the summer.

Day to day itinerary

You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Marrakech. After going from Marrakech to Imlil (1,780m), you will set off on a 6 hour trek out of the Imlil Valley and into the Azzadene Valley. Along the way, you will pass Tizi N’Mzik at 2450m, the refuge at Azib Tamsoult, and the Ighouliden Waterfalls. Overnight, you’ll stay in the Lipeney Mountain Refuge at 3,000m or at Azib n Tamsoult.

Lunch and dinner are included.

Today involves a climb out of the Azzadene Valley to the Toubkal Refuge over the Aguelzim Mountain Pass at 3560m. You’ll have lunch while seeing the spectacular views over the Atlas Mountain Range. Overnight, you’ll stay in a tent near the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner Hut). You’ll do about 7 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

You’ll set off early in the morning to climb Jebel Ouanoukrim. The trek will start with a gentle walk up to the Tizi Ougane mountain pass, and then you’ll go through the ridge to reach the summit at 4088m. From the top, the views of Toubkal and the surrounding mountains are spectacular. In the late morning/early afternoon, you’ll start your descent back towards the refuge for a well-deserved hot drink and a relaxing afternoon. You’ll do about 6 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included.

You’ll get up early to climb up Toubkal (4167m) from where you’ll have wonderful views over the Atlas Range, Sahara Desert and past the refuge and the well-worn path back to Imlil. This will be a fairly long day with 8-9 hours of trekking, involving 900m of ascent then almost 2500m of descent down to Imlil. You’ll back to Marrakech.

Breakfast and lunch are included.

What to bring?

You need to prepare as you would for a trek in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (during autumn through to late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind after your trip; carry out what you carry in.

Our treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can go on the Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On the mule treks, you usually have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses/with families or doing wild camping in 2-person tents.

In addition to what you’d regularly pack, here is a checklist:

  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for the camp/guesthouse
  • Trekking trousers
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers / rain-pants
