3 Day Azzaden Valley & Toubkal Climb

Overview

Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest mountain is 4,167 metres tall and it has amazing views of Marrakech. This is an exciting trek with fantastic views, and only a little bit of snow. It is easier to climb it in the summer.

Day to day itinerary

You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Marrakech. After going from Marrakech to Imlil (1,780m), you will set off on a 6 hour trek out of the Imlil Valley and into the Azzaden Valley. Along the way, you will pass Tizi N’Mzik at 2450m, the refuge at Azib Tamsoult, and the Ighouliden Waterfalls. Overnight, you’ll stay in a tent in Azib Tamsoult. You’ll do about 5 hours of walking.

Lunch and dinner included.

Today involves a climb out of the Azzaden Valley to the Toubkal Refuge over the Aguelzim Mountain Pass at 3560m. You’ll have lunch while seeing the spectacular views over the Atlas Mountain Range. Overnight, you’ll stay in a tent near the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner Hut). You’ll do about 7 hours of walking.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Early in the morning, you’ll attempt to reach the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. Your route will take you up the south cirque, and you’ll cross the stream above the refuge. The walking is relatively easy, but the scree and the altitude will make it quite difficult in parts. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile. When you reach the summit, you will see breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape. There are unrestricted views in every direction. You can see the Marrakesh Plain, the High Atlas in the north, the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara. You will retrace your steps when you descend the mountain and head back towards Imlil. You’ll go back to Marrakech. You’ll do about 9 to 10 hours of walking..

Breakfast and lunch included.

What to bring?

You need to prepare as you would for a trek in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (during autumn through to late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind after your trip; carry out what you carry in.

Our treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can go on the Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On the mule treks, you usually have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses/with families or doing wild camping in 2-person tents.

In addition to what you’d regularly pack, here is a checklist:

  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for the camp/guesthouse
  • Trekking trousers
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers/rain-pants
