After breakfast in the hotel, you’ll load your bags onto the transport vehicle and begin the journey to the trek starting point. In a short time, you’ll be beyond the hustle and bustle of Marrakech and travelling through the farmlands of the Moroccan countryside. On the way, your guide will give you a detailed talk on Morocco’s cultural history and answer any questions that you may have. You will stop in the town of Azilal for mint tea, refreshments, and some lunch before making your way down into the Bougamez Valley, an arid, craggy ad starkly beautiful region, where you’ll be stopping near village of Agouti (1780m). Here, you’ll meet with the trek crew, begin trekking into the lush farmland towards Arous. You’ll be following the river as it meanders through poppy strewn fields.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

You’ll leave your muleteers and pack up your camp gear before steadily rising traverse towards Tizi-m-Oumskiyg (2910m). You’ll be entering the higher mountain parts of the Central Atlas. You’ll rest and have some mid morning snacks before trekking again. Approximately 2 miles of gradual ascent later, you’ll reach the ridge and the viewpoint of Aghouixni Est (3400m). From here, you’ll have spectacular views of M’Goun and you can clearly see the next day’s route. Then, you’ll descend to Tilibiyt N’Tarkeddit, overlooking the Tessaout Valley. This is a green oasis area used frequently by Berber herdsmen. You’ll camp near a small mountain hut with good toilet facilities and showers (for a small fee). The rest of the afternoon is free for you to spend enjoying the nomadic Berber ambience of this tranquil spot.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner included.

Before dawn, you’ll start going to the lower slopes of M’Goun. An hour or so later, the first rays of sunshine will begin to creep across the lower slopes of the M’Goun Massif. The route is fairly straightforward. After 4 or 5 hours, you’ll reach the stunning ridgeline that leads to M’Goun. To the south, you can see the Jebel Sahro region and the Sahara beyond it. To the southwest, you can see the Toubkal range in the distance. After another hour of gently ascending along the ridge, you’ll reach the cairned summit of M’Goun itself (4068m). After the obligatory summit photos, you’ll begin your descent. You’ll head south initially, and then you’ll go down scree slopes to get to your lunch spot by the river. After lunch, you’ll continue going towards Tiguitine (2700m), whwere you will camp for the night. Tiguitine is a very pleasant camp that is surrounded by strange rock formations and babbling streams. Your crew will no doubt treat you to some Berber songs and dancing in the evening to celebrate your success.

You’ll have a more leisurely start today as you continue to going the fertile farmland of the Central Atlas foothills. After a short ascent, you’ll gradually descend, and pass by small thickets of fig trees and criss-crossing streams before you emerge from the undergrowth at Ifni Ait Hamou (2550m). There’s a small café by the trailside that offers mint tea and biscuits. Two miles further, you’ll come upon the village of Tighremt N’Tichki. As the river broadens, you will pass rushing waterfalls and use stepping-stones to cross where necessary. You’ll take advantage of the riverside trees for shade and stop for lunch. After another couple of hours, you’ll arrive at the village of Ameskar El Fougani, from where you’ll continue to Ameskar El Tahtani (1990m). You’ll camp just outside of the entrance to the Ameskar Gorge.

You’ll make a fairly early start today to avoid the heat later in the day. Once you leave the campsite, the path steepens quickly as you go through the ‘Petites Gorges du M’Goun’. Eventually, the gorge opens out once more, giving way to open farmland. You’ll reach your lunch spot, a shady riverside nook, after around 4 hours of trekking. What to bring?

You need to prepare as you would for a trek in any mountain region; it can be warm and sunny during the day but the weather in the mountains can quickly change from sunshine to snow and cold winds (during autumn through to late spring). Please do not leave any rubbish behind after your trip; carry out what you carry in.

Our treks are tailored to match the season and your level of fitness. You have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses, from where you can take daily walks, or you can go on the Atlas Mule Trek for 2+ days. On the mule treks, you usually have the choice of staying in Berber guesthouses/with families or doing wild camping in 2-person tents.

In addition to what you’d regularly pack, here is a checklist:

  • Good walking boots and socks
  • Comfortable shoes/slippers for the camp/guesthouse
  • Trekking trousers
  • Lightweight waterproof over-trousers/rain-pants
