The crater rim is over 2,200 meters high and the crater area has its own climate. Then we descend over 600 meters into the crater to look at wildlife for half the day. Supported by a year round supply of water and animal food, the Ngorongoro National Park hosts a vast variety of animals, which includes herds of wildebeest, zebras, buffalos, elands, warthogs, hippos, and giant African elephants. Another popular part of this picturesque national park is its dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. We will visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, which is one of the main attractions of the crater. A large number of flamingos, hippos and other water birds can usually been seen here. In the afternoon, you will have a hot lunch outdoors, and then we will start ascending from the crater and head to the lodge.

The park is also home to buffaloes, zebras and wildebeest which are always closely followed by a range of predators such as lions. Leopards are seen every now and again but cheetahs are rarely spotted. From the open roof of the safari vehicle you will be able to take in the landscape and watch the animals. We will visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, which is one of the main attractions of the crater. A large number of flamingos, hippos and other water birds can usually been seen here. In the afternoon, you will have a hot lunch outdoors, and then we will start ascending from the crater and head to Moshi for dinner and an overnight stay.

If you have any special requests, we can always customise the safari according to what you want. You can choose multiple activities for your safari such as a hot air balloon safari, sailing in a kayak, a safari with a visit to a Maasai village, a treetop walkway in Lake Manyara, a multiple day stay in the village of the Hadzabe tribe, a visit to Lake Manyara with the option of climbling the Ol Donyo Lengai volcano. We can organise nearly anything you want. We can also organise trips to other park in Tanzania that aren’t in our offer. We don’t mention them due to their distance from Moshi.
You can also get the best accommodation possible, which will of course increase the price. You can also get safaris with the option of sleeping in a tent, which will decrease the price but also the comfort.
Other things that you can change are the length of your stay in a park and if you sleep directly in the park or just near it. During longer safaris, you can also pick days for relaxation.
It isn’t a problem for us to arrange anything you’d like, so if you want a tailored safari, don’t hesitate to contact us.

General Safari Information
Your safari guide
Our safari guides are all well experienced in the field and passionate about showing you the amazing wildlife and culture Tanzania has to offer. All are fluent in English, and if you have a special language request just let us know as many will also have an additional language (e.g. French, Spanish, German). They are also well trained in 4×4 driving so will be able to get you anywhere on the varying road qualities we have here! Please feel free to ask your guide any questions you may have about the wildlife, culture or trip along the way.
Your meals & drinks
All meals will be provided by the lodges you are staying at- if you are leaving on a game drive during the day then a hamper with lunch or lunchbox will be provided. Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at most lodges. We will provide mineral water in the car each day.
Transport
4×4 Safari Land cruiser with 7 seats. Our safari vehicles have been specifically modified for wildlife viewing, with a pop top roof which will be open during all game drives and sliding windows. Our cars are equipped with a radio system for guide communication with base and park rangers. We carry at least one pair of binoculars in each vehicle. Although we do everything within our powers to ensure your maximum comfort, the roads in Tanzania can vary greatly in quality from newly tarmaced to completely rough and muddy or dusty (depending on rainy or dry season!). Driving times can be long, even to cover what may seem like relatively short distances. Although we regularly maintain our vehicles (with a check-up in the garage after every safari) they can and do sometimes pop a tyre or breakdown. Our guides are well trained with lots of experience in car mechanics and 98% of the time can fix the issue themselves and you’ll be off spotting zebras again in less than 20 minutes! Please be patient if your car encounters a mechanical issue.
Accommodation
We’ve searched high and low to select some of the best lodges within the Northern Circuit. We like to use a mixture of traditional lodges as well as luxury permanent tented camps (to get you right amongst the nature!). For more details on the specific lodges for your safari please refer to your itinerary. *Where specific lodges are named, if between time of quotation and booking confirmation the lodge specified may be fully booked we will ensure to find a lodge of a similar or higher quality. You will be advised of this change as soon as possible. If you choose to upgrade to a different lodge, you will be responsible to pay the difference in price.

Tipping
A great area of confusion and unease for many tourists, tipping is a generally expected and highly appreciated (although not compulsory) part of your safari tour. It is a great way of saying ‘thank you’ to those that have helped you to have a wonderful experience here. Tips should be given at the end of your safari when saying your goodbyes. If you are part of a group safari it is best to try to discuss with everyone beforehand how you wish to do the tipping. To help you feel at ease we have provided a general guide below but please remember that tipping is a way of you showing your gratitude for your safari staff and is up to you! The guidelines given below are for a group amount, not individually. Guide: 20-25 USD/ day.
A $1 gratuity to restaurant staff per meal (lunch/dinner), $1 to hotels/lodges porters per bag upon arrival and departure and $2-3 to transfer drivers per transfer is also appreciated. A $5-10 per person to Balloon safari pilot if taking the optional Hot Air Balloon Safari tour. As always, gratuities are an individual expression of thanks and should be based on the level of service provided.

September thru March is also a good time to visit. Rainy season occurs April and May. Mount Kilimanjaro is very, very cold at its higher elevations.
Money & credit cards
Credit cards are the most convenient way to pay for items you purchase as you travel. Be sure to call your credit card providers to let them know you will be travelling abroad, the places you’ll be visiting and the dates of your trip. This is important for your own protection. For small purchases, we recommend that you use the ATM machines to get cash in local currency so that you can avoid using your credit card in unknown shops where there is a higher risk of having your credit card numbers will be . We suggest that you bring along cash in small denominations and we highly recommended that you bring crisp, new bills. If you wish to exchange U.S. dollars to the local currency, new, crisp U.S. dollar in large bills ($20, $50, $100) are preferred. Old, torn, crumpled bills & US dollars printed 2012 or earlier are not accepted in East Africa.
Always notify your bank prior to departure to avoid any problems using your credit or debit card while travelling.
Shopping
The best items to shop for in Tanzania are local handcrafts including pottery, Makonde carpets, sculptures, paintings, soapstone carvings, fabric, cloth paintings of Kilimanjaro, chests, and gems. Prices are not usually marked and bargaining is expected.
Electricity & power adaptors
230 volts. Plugs D & G. You will need a voltage converter, and plug adaptor in order to use U.S. appliances. We recommend getting a universal adaptor and converter kit.
Mobile phones & internet
Want to take your mobile phone, tablet or laptop, but not sure how to get cell service or Wi-Fi? Read up on using your mobile phone abroad and the top 5 ways to get Internet abroad.
Photography
Cameras and video recorders are permitted, and photography is generally permitted everywhere except at airports and military installations. Memory cards for digital cameras will be available in major cities.
