Naro-Moru – Sirimon

Naro-Moru – Sirimon route

  • 4 days

Overview

This is the fastest route to take to get to Point Lenana (4985m). It is on the west side of the mountain, and it is also one of the steepest routes. The route is not particularly scenic, but it has some of the best tourist accommodation. Most climbers begin at the park gate, although it is possible to drive a vehicle as far as the Met Station (3050 meters). The challenges along this route include the vertical bog and the extremely steep trail on loose gravel.

Starting in Naro Moru, the first part of the route takes you along a gravel road through farmlands for about 13km to the start of the forest. Another 5km of hiking will bring you to the park entry gate (2400m), from where it takes you 8km to reach the road-head, and the Met Station Hut (3000m), where you’ll stay for the night and acclimatise.

Day to day itinerary

After being picked up in Nairobi, you’ll drive to the Naru Moru park gate for lunch.  From the gate, you’ll trek up through the magnificent montane forests, bamboo areas, and giant heather zones before reaching the high altitude moorland and your first cabins (Met Station), where you’ll have dinner and stay overnight.

This is a gentle trek that takes you 3-4 hrs. You’ll be gaining an elevation of 600m.

You’ll take a short walk to the end of the forest, from where you’ll hike across the marshy vertical bog of the lower moorlands. You’ll have a picnic lunch at the before continuing further to get Mackinders Camp, ascending 1300m in about 5 hours. You’ll have dinner and stay overnight – at Mackinders Camp (4300m).

You’ll leave at 03:00am to attempt to reach the summit. You’ll trek for 3-4 hours across bare rocks and scree slopes to get to Pt. Lenana (4985m), the summit. You’ll arrive in time to see the African sunrise. Later, you’ll go down to Shipton’s Camp for breakfast. After breakfast, you’ll begin a 5-hour descent via Mackinder`s Valley to get to the Old Moses camp (3300m). The descent is gentle and it gives you lots of time to enjoy the fascinating scenery, which includes the moorlands, before you reach the camp.

You’ll have dinner and stay overnight at the Old Moses Camp.

After an early morning breakfast, you’ll descend for 3 hours through the rain forest to get to the Sirimon Park gate and catch a vehicle for the return journey to Nairobi. You’ll be arriving in the early evening.
